Objectives and Activities
 

State Trading (General) Corporation was established under the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation Act No. 33 of 1970. STC General Trading Company Limited is the successor of the Sri Lanka State Trading General Corporation. The objectives of this company is the caring for and atttending  to consumer needs by making available quality consumer goods at reasonable prices increasing the purchasing power of general public and stabilizing the price levels.

The main sale items of STC General Trading Company are stationery, office equipment including Olympia brand type writers, household appliances, light engineering machinery, tools, steel and wooden furniture, tyres, agricultural implements and chemical and allied products.


Progress of the Company in 2008

  • Sale of Chemicals :
    State Trading Company has monopoly rights in marketing of chemicals epecially those of explosive nature such as Ammonium Nitrate used in rock blasting purposes and Potassium Nitrate used for fire works industry. These items are issued to license holders with the approval of the Defense Ministry. Due to the increase in the development projects implemented in Sri Lanka, the sale of chemicals has gone up significantly. The total sales income of chemicals has exceeded a  record  of Rs 117 mn as of 15th August 2008.

  • Sale of Stationary and Other Items :
    The supply of office equipment, stationery, steel and wooden furniture, tyres, agricultural implements and household electric appliances have gone up remarkably compared to last year. The company  was able to receive Rs. 46 mn in 2008 by the end of August only in sales of  office equipment and stationery. There is a positive trend in company's total turn over due to implementation of effective policies for promoting sales income.
    STC General Trading Company is operated through its retail outlets at Nawam Mawatha, Mt. Lavinia and in Jaffna and, through agents in main cities to serve customers more effectively. Business activities of Duty Free Shop at Nawam Mawatha have been expanded and as a result, it has been able to provide easily high quality consumer items even to the representatives of the UN and Diplomatic personnel.

  • Financial Progress - 2008
    Rs. 210 mn has been earned by the end of August. The following table indicates the progress achieved in various trading sections.

Revelutionary Change in Sri Lankan Communication Sector

  • STC - Mobitel Upahara Package
    STC Company introduced an official special mobile telephone package called “Upahara” for the government employees and retired government officers with the coordination of Sri Lanka Mobitel Company,  in line with the directions provided by the Hon. Minister of Trade, Marketing Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Services. This is the concept of H.E. the President This package provides telephone service facility of 100 hours free service and its maximum charge is Rs. 240 per month.

    The special features of this mobile telephone facility are, it is the cheapest package  introduced  up to now and it has 18 hours free out- going calls and entirely free incoming calls.

  • Future Plans
    The sale of chemicals for rock blasting purpose has gone up due to increase in constructions of roads in the country. Therefore it is expected to import more chemicals to meet  increasing demand in 2008/2009 and expected the increase in sales turn over is 20 percent.

    It has been planned to modernize Sales Promotion Centre at Nawam Mawatha. A Detail study regarding the activities of the Company has been carried out with the aim of entering the consumer market to provide goods at concessionary prices.

    The special plans are being formulated in order to organize and promote business activities carried out at Jaffna STC Promotion Centre aiming to double the sales volume.
