| The Objective and Functions of the Fund |
|
| Defined by the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund Act No. 66 of 1981 |
|
- To provide higher education facilities to youth.
- To provide assistance to deserving youth who have
completed their secondary education satisfactorily, so as to enable
them to complete their academic, industrial or technical education
at a university of technical or higher educational institute,
as the case may be .
- To set up and assist in the management of vocational
training institute for enabling youth to develop their vocational
skills and competence;
- To set up and assist in the management and conduct
of schools, institutes, foundations and similar institutions engaged
in the furtherance of education; and
- To provide assistance for the development and improvement
of the skills and competence of lecturers, teachers and such persons
engaged in the furtherance of education.

| 01. Awards of scholarships for the students in Academic Year 2005/2006 |
|
- The Mahapola scholarship Award Ceremonies for the
Academic Year 2005/2006 were held in June 2007. Honourable Prime
Minister, Rathnasiri Wickramanayake has presided the National
and Western Province Scholarship Award Ceremony for Colombo, Gampaha
& Kalutara Districts which was held on 10th June 2007. Other
Ceremonies were held in respective districts on separate dates.
- Updated new data for 10,000 students in the Academic
year 2005/2006.
- Started payments from August 2007 for the students
of the Academic Year 2005/2006 with the arrears from the inception
of the courses.

| 02. Selection
of students for the Academic Year 2006/2007 |
|
| Approval has been granted by the Board of Trustees of Mahapola Higher Education Scholarships for 9000 students of the Academic Year 2006/2007 on the recommendations of the University Grant Commission on the results of G.C.E. (A/L) 2006. Out of the 9000 Scholarships, 900 will be awarded on Merit basis and the balance 8100 Scholarships will be awarded to the students who belong to the families of lower income level on Merit basis. The number of Scholarships allocated will remain same when compared to the 9000 Scholarships awarded in the last year. However 56% of the total of 15,996 students who gained admission to the Universities will be covered by the Mahapola Scholarships in 2006/2007.

| In addition to the 9000 Scholarships recommended by the University Grants Commission, about 1500 Scholarships will be awarded to the students who are following other courses such as Higher National Diplomas equivalent to degree in following other Higher Educational Institutes. |

| 03. Payments
of Scholarships |
Mahapola Scholarships
recipient is paid maximum of 10 monthly installments per academic
year. Scholarship installment was increased by another Rs.500/- from
01.04.2006. Accordingly, with the some of Rs.350/- paid by the General
Treasury, a scholarship recipient has been paid Rs.2550/- for a Merit
Scholarships and Rs.2500/- for an Ordinary Scholarship. The said installments
are paying for the year 2007 too. Mahapola Trust Fund spent Rs.645 M for the Mahapola Scholarship payments in 2006. Compared to last year, this year expenditure for Mahapola Schlorship payments will be about Rs.800 M. |

| 03. Information
Technology Education |
The Board of
Trustees of the Mahapola Higher Education Trust Fund in 1999 established
an institute for information Technology studies for the students who
have not admitted to the Universities and to give opportunities to
them to follow IT Degree and Diploma Courses.

| Mahapola Lottery
License operated by GTEC Lanka Ltd was not succeeded. Therefore, the
Mahapola Trust Fund is looking for a new lottery arrangement to generate
income to the Mahapola Trust Fund. |
